Transponder & Chip Keys
Most cars built since the late 1990s need more than a cut blade to start — the key has to carry a chip your car recognizes. We cut and program transponder keys at your vehicle.
Call (262) 325-7879What is a transponder key and how much does it cost? A transponder key has a chip that your car's immobilizer reads before starting the engine. At ATD Automotive, transponder keys start at $245, with extra copies from $65. We cut the blade and program the chip to your vehicle in one mobile visit — no tow to a dealer required.
If your car won't start with a key that looks otherwise correct, or a locksmith or parts store has told you that you need a "chip key," you're dealing with a transponder key. It's the standard anti-theft system on the vast majority of vehicles built since the late 1990s, and it means the blade shape alone isn't enough — the key has to be electronically matched to your car. That matching step is where a lot of hardware-store key cutters and even some mobile locksmiths stop short. We don't.
This is also the most common way people end up with a key that "almost" works — a hardware store or big-box kiosk can cut the mechanical blade to match your lock, but has no way to program the chip inside it, so the key turns the ignition tumbler but the car refuses to start. If that's happened to you, the blade you have may be usable; it just needs the chip added and programmed, which we can often do without cutting a whole new key from scratch.
How transponder key service works
- Call with your vehicle info. Year, make, and model tell us the transponder type your car uses and what blank we need to bring.
- We verify ownership. Registration, title, or insurance in your name, matched to the vehicle.
- We cut the key. From your existing key, lock, or vehicle code — or from scratch if you've lost every key you have.
- We program the chip. Using diagnostic equipment connected to your vehicle, we pair the new key's transponder to your car's immobilizer.
- We test the start. The car has to actually start on the new key before we call the job done.
- We cut a spare, if you want one. Additional transponder copies are cheaper than the first key and worth having on hand.
The whole process typically happens in one visit, whether we're duplicating a chip you already have or building a key from nothing after an all-keys-lost situation — the equipment and the on-site process are the same either way.

What affects your price
Transponder pricing depends mainly on your vehicle's specific chip and programming system — some manufacturers use a straightforward, fast procedure, while others (particularly certain high-security systems) require a longer relearn sequence or additional steps. Whether you have an existing key to duplicate from, versus a full all-keys-lost job, also affects the price and the time on-site. We'll confirm both when you call.
When you need this service
- Your car has an insert-and-turn ignition (not push-button start) and won't start on a newly cut key
- You've lost your only chip key
- You want a spare transponder key on hand as a backup
- A hardware store cut you a blank that turns the lock but won't start the car
- You bought a used vehicle with an unprogrammed or missing key
Mobile beats a dealer trip
Transponder programming used to be dealer-only work, and plenty of drivers still assume it is. It isn't — the diagnostic equipment that talks to your immobilizer is available outside the dealer network, and we've carried it since 2012. Dealerships often charge $300–$500 for a comparable transponder key once programming is factored in, and the car typically has to sit on their lot while it's done. We do the same job in your driveway.
Transponder systems vary by manufacturer — see our Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, and GM pages for make-specific notes, or call with your vehicle info. If your vehicle uses a push-button smart key instead of an insert key, see key fob programming. We cover transponder work throughout Walworth County, Kenosha County, and McHenry County. Dealerships that need transponder key origination for lot inventory or trade-ins can find volume pricing on our dealership services page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a transponder key cost?
A transponder (chip) key starts at $245, with additional copies from $65 each. High-security variants used by some Kia and Hyundai models start at $195. Exact pricing depends on your vehicle's year, make, and model.
What is a transponder key, exactly?
It's a car key with a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert or bring the key near the ignition, your car's immobilizer reads the chip and confirms it's authorized before allowing the engine to start. Most vehicles built since the late 1990s use one.
How is a transponder key different from a standard key?
A standard key is a mechanical cut only — no chip, no electronics. A transponder key looks similar but has a chip that must be programmed to your specific vehicle. Cutting the blade alone won't get a transponder-equipped car to start; the chip has to be paired to the immobilizer too.
Can you cut a transponder key without an existing key?
Yes. We can generate a transponder key from your vehicle's information even with zero existing keys — this is the same all-keys-lost process we use for standard keys, just with the chip programming step added.
Why do transponder keys cost more than standard keys?
The blank itself costs more because of the embedded chip, and cutting it requires programming equipment that communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer computer — a step a standard mechanical key doesn't need.
Do all cars use transponder keys?
No. Many vehicles from the 1990s and earlier use purely mechanical keys, and some newer vehicles have moved to smart/proximity keys instead of a traditional insert-and-turn transponder key. We confirm your key type when you tell us your vehicle's year, make, and model.
Is a transponder key cheaper here than at the dealer?
Typically, yes. Dealerships often charge $300–$500 for a transponder key once programming is included, and usually require the vehicle on their lot. We cut and program on-site, often for less, with no tow.
