Car Key Replacement
Lost your car key, snapped it in the ignition, or lost every key you own? We cut and program a new one at your location — no tow, no waiting on a mail-order key.
Call (262) 325-7879How much does car key replacement cost? Standard keys start at $165, transponder (chip) keys start at $245, and high-security Kia/Hyundai keys start at $195. Extra copies run from $10 for standard keys. We cut and program the key at your vehicle — including full all-keys-lost jobs — so there's no tow to a dealer.
A lost or broken car key isn't just inconvenient — for most drivers it's an emergency, and it usually happens at the worst possible time: a parking lot, a driveway at 6 a.m., a gas station 40 minutes from home. ATD Automotive has been handling exactly this call since 2012, run by Patrick Murphy and Dan Perdue out of Genoa City, WI. We carry the equipment to cut and program a working key on the spot, whether you've got zero working keys or just need a spare you can trust.
"Replacement" covers more ground than most people expect. It's not just the classic lost-key call — it's the used car you bought with a single worn-out key and no idea where a spare might be, the key that snapped off flush with the ignition barrel, the fob that finally died after years of use, and the straightforward all-keys-lost situation where every key for the vehicle is genuinely gone. Each of those starts the same way: a phone call with your year, make, and model, and a visit to wherever your car actually is.
How car key replacement works
- Call with your vehicle info. Year, make, model, and — if you have it — your VIN. This lets us confirm your key type and bring the right blank and equipment the first time.
- We verify ownership. Registration, title, or insurance matching your name and the vehicle. This is standard for any legitimate locksmith cutting a working key to your car.
- We come to you. Home, work, a parking lot, roadside — anywhere in our Southeast Wisconsin / Northern Illinois service area.
- We cut the key. For standard keys, that's a mechanical cut from your vehicle's code or lock. For all-keys-lost jobs, we generate the key data directly from the vehicle — no existing key required.
- We program it if needed. Transponder, remote, and smart keys get programmed to your vehicle's immobilizer on-site with the same class of equipment a dealership uses.
- We test it and cut a spare while we're there. Most customers get a second key cut in the same visit — it's cheap insurance and saves a second service call later.

What affects your price
The starting prices above cover the baseline job for each key type, but a few things move the final quote: whether the vehicle needs a standard or transponder key, whether it's a remote/smart key with a more involved programming procedure, how many working keys already exist (an all-keys-lost job takes more steps than duplicating an existing key), and the make and model itself — some manufacturers use programming systems that simply take longer to work with than others. We'll walk through this with you on the phone before we head out, so the quote you hear is the price you pay, not a number that grows once we arrive.
When you need this service
- You've lost your only working key and have no spare
- Your key snapped off in the ignition or door lock
- You bought a used vehicle with just one key, or none
- Your existing key still works but is worn out and you want a reliable backup
- A dealer quoted a multi-day wait for a mail-order key and you need your car sooner
Mobile beats the dealer or a tow
If you're locked into an all-keys-lost situation and there's a dealer nearby, the standard process there is a tow to their lot, a diagnostic fee, and a wait — often several days — for a key to be ordered, cut, and programmed. Dealerships often charge $300–$600+ once towing and programming fees are added in. We do the same job, at your car, usually within an hour of arrival, and typically for less. There's no lot fee and no rental car needed while you wait.
We cut and program keys for GM, Ford/Lincoln, Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Kia/Hyundai, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/RAM, and VW/Audi vehicles, among others — see our keys by make pages for model-specific notes. We're based in Genoa City and serve drivers throughout Walworth County, Lake Geneva, and McHenry County regularly. If your key situation involves a stuck ignition rather than just a missing key, see our ignition repair page instead — sometimes it's the cylinder, not the key, that's the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does car key replacement cost?
A standard replacement key starts at $165, and a transponder (chip) key starts at $245. Extra copies are cheaper — from $10 for a standard key. High-security Kia/Hyundai keys start at $195. Exact pricing depends on your vehicle's year, make, and model.
Can you make a key if I lost all my keys, not just one?
Yes — all-keys-lost is one of our most common calls. We don't need an existing key or spare. We generate a new key from your vehicle's information and program it directly, right at your location.
Do I need to prove I own the car?
Yes. Because we're cutting a working key to your vehicle, we ask for proof of ownership — registration, title, or insurance card matching your name and the vehicle — before we start. This protects you as much as it protects us.
How long does a replacement key take?
Most standard and transponder key jobs are done in well under an hour once we're on-site, including cutting and programming. Some smart-key and high-security jobs run a bit longer depending on the vehicle's programming procedure.
What's the difference between a standard key and a transponder key?
A standard key is a mechanical cut with no chip — it starts your car with the ignition alone. A transponder (chip) key has an embedded chip the vehicle's immobilizer reads before it will start; most vehicles from the late 1990s onward use one. We identify which type your car needs when you call.
Is this cheaper than going to the dealer?
Almost always. Dealerships often charge $300–$600+ for a replacement key once you add the tow (your car has to come to them) and diagnostic fees. We come to you, and our starting prices are typically 30–50% below dealer quotes.
Do you cut keys for older cars without a chip?
Yes. Standard mechanical keys for older vehicles are actually our simplest and least expensive job, starting at $165, with extra copies from $10.
