Volkswagen and Audi share the same corporate parent and much of the same key and immobilizer architecture, so their key technology has evolved together. Older VW and Audi vehicles from before the late 1990s used plain mechanically-cut keys. Since the late 1990s and through the 2000s, most models transitioned to transponder (chip) keys, which have to be recognized by the vehicle's immobilizer before it will start. More recently, many VW and Audi models — particularly newer Tiguan, Atlas, Q5, and higher Audi trims — have moved to proximity smart keys with push-button start.

VW and Audi programming can involve more specialized procedures and security access than some other makes, and pricing varies more by specific model, trim, and year. Because of that, we don't publish a flat rate card for this group — we confirm your exact vehicle's key type and quote the job directly over the phone before we come out.

Before we come out, we ask for your VIN, year, make, and model, and whether you have a working key, a spare, or none at all — that's usually enough to identify the key generation and give you a real number rather than a placeholder "starting at" price. If a job turns out to need more than expected once we're on-site, we'll always confirm the price with you before doing the work.

ATD vs. the Dealership

A VW or Audi dealership can cut and program keys too, but usually only during business hours with your vehicle on their lot, and some jobs mean leaving the car overnight. We come to your Jetta, Tiguan, or A4 wherever it is — home, work, or roadside — and aim to finish in one visit.
